What is AirPower?

Apart from the reveal of a forthcoming charging mat by the name of AirPower, there's little more information. What do we know?

  • Works with the latest devices announced by Apple (iPhone 8 & X, AirPods & Apple Watch Series 3)
  • It's white

Not a lot then, what I'd like to know:

  • The price
  • Does it work with Apple Watch Series 2?
  • Is it Qi compatible so devices from other manufacturers can make use of it?

Looking at the animation that tells you which device has just been placed on the mat, I have some thoughts on how this works. My guess would be that there's a W1 or W2 chip in the mat itself which can identify what's now charging and then relay that information to an iPhone that's also on the mat and is also charging.

Will you get the same information when the phone is off the charger? Not sure it makes sense to as it could interrupt what you're doing and the animation shown at the keynote clearly shows that it shrinks to fit a notification style message.

The price will be $99+ I'm sure, so not for everyone (certainly not for me). I'm looking forward to the inevitable tear down by iFixit most of all :)
